Fridge Freezer Leaking
A leaking fridge freezer can be a real headache. Not only does it create a mess, but it can also lead to more serious issues if not addressed promptly. In this guide, we will explore the common causes of a leaking fridge freezer and provide step-by-step instructions on how to fix them. Remember, if you’re not comfortable doing these repairs yourself, Yorkshire Appliances offers professional repair services.
Common Causes of a Leaking Fridge Freezer
- Unlevel Fridge Freezer: If your fridge freezer isn’t level, it can cause water to pool and leak out. The front of the fridge freezer should be slightly higher than the back to allow coolant to flow freely. If the coolant can’t circulate, it may pool in the pipes, forcing the fridge to work harder and creating extra condensation that can leak onto the floor.
- Blocked Defrost Drain: The defrost drain is typically located at the back of the freezer. If it’s blocked by food particles, ice, or other debris, it can cause the fridge to work overtime, leading to condensation and water leakage.
- Problematic Water Supply Line: If your fridge freezer has an ice maker or water dispenser, a leak in the water supply line can cause water to drip onto the floor.
- Damaged Drain Pan: The drain pan, located underneath the fridge freezer, collects condensation. If it’s cracked or warped, water can escape and pool on the floor.
How to Fix a Leaking Fridge Freezer
1. Level the Fridge Freezer
If your fridge freezer isn’t level, you’ll need to adjust its legs or rollers. Here’s how:
- Remove the grill from the bottom front of the fridge freezer.
- Use a spirit level to check if the fridge is even from left to right and slightly higher at the front than the back.
- Adjust the legs or rollers as per your owner’s manual instructions. You may need an ajustable sapanner for this
- Aim for a ¼ to ½ inch rise in the front, and check the level again. check out this handy bit of kit (air wedge pump bags) for ajusting appliances and furniture.
2. Unblock the Defrost Drain
If the defrost drain is blocked, follow these steps:
- Open the freezer and ensure nothing is blocking the defrost drain at the back wall.
- If the drain is blocked by items in the freezer, rearrange them to allow air to flow freely.
- If the blockage persists, you may need to defrost the freezer. Unplug the fridge freezer, transfer your food to another freezer, and leave the freezer door open to allow it to defrost.
- Once defrosted, use a turkey baster or funnel to flush warm water down the defrost drain to clear any remaining debris.
3. Check the Water Supply Line
If your fridge freezer has an ice maker or water dispenser, check the water supply line:
- Unplug the fridge freezer and move it away from the wall.
- Inspect the plastic hose that runs from your ice maker and water filter down the back of the appliance.
- If you see water dripping or collecting along the exterior of the hose, you’ll need to replace it. Turn off the water supply valve, which is usually located under the sink or in the basement, and replace the hose following your manufacturer’s instructions.
4. Replace the Drain Pan
If the drain pan is damaged, you’ll need to replace it:
- Pull out the drain pan from under the fridge freezer.
- If the pan is cracked or warped, purchase a replacement drip tray.
- Replace the old pan with the new one.

Maintenance Tips to Prevent Leaks
Regular maintenance can help prevent your fridge freezer from leaking. Here are some tips:
- Regularly Defrost Your Freezer: If your freezer isn’t self-defrosting, make sure to defrost it regularly to prevent ice build-up that can block the defrost drain.
- Clean the Defrost Drain Regularly: Regularly clean the defrost drain to prevent blockages. You can do this by flushing it with warm water.
- Check the Water Supply Line Regularly: Regularly check the water supply line for leaks, especially if your fridge freezer has an ice maker or water dispenser.
- Check the Drain Pan Regularly: Regularly check the drain pan for damage and replace it if necessary.
Remember, regular maintenance can help extend the life of your fridge freezer and prevent costly repairs. If you need help with maintenance or repairs, don’t hesitate to contact Yorkshire Appliances.
Defrosting the Fridge Freezer
Regularly defrosting your fridge freezer is essential to maintain its efficiency and prevent excessive ice buildup. Follow these steps to defrost your fridge freezer:
- Preparation: Empty the freezer compartment of all perishable items and transfer them to a cooler with ice packs or another freezer. Turn off the fridge freezer or unplug it from the power supply.
- Open the freezer door: Prop the freezer door open to allow warm air to circulate and expedite the defrosting process. Place towels or absorbent materials around the freezer to catch any melting ice or water.
- Remove excess ice and water: As the ice melts, use a towel or sponge to soak up the water and remove any remaining ice. Be gentle when removing ice to avoid damaging the interior surfaces.
- Clean and dry the freezer: Once all the ice has melted, wipe down the interior of the freezer with a mixture of mild detergent and warm water. Pay special attention to the corners and edges where ice may have accumulated. Ensure all surfaces are thoroughly dry before closing the freezer door.
Regularly defrosting your freezer not only prevents excessive ice buildup but also helps maintain proper airflow, temperature regulation, and energy efficiency.

I have a hot point RLA36 frost free ‘fridge. It is leaking water directly onto the floor. On inspecting the evaporation tray above the compressor 1/3 of the tray (left side) Ewan full and consisted of water and sludge of some description. I replaced the tray after cleaning and ensuring that the normal drain hole was clear. I was unable at the time to remove the frost free cover and confirm that that drain hole was clear. Be that as it may, how can water leak onto the floor and NOT the evaporation tray
Hi Mke. Thanks for your question. It depends on where the water is coming from. There could be an ice blockage somewhere. We would suggest defrosting the appliance completeley for 24-48 hours and see if that helps. Let us know if you have any other questions.
