Fixing Your Leaking Dishwasher At Home
Leaking Dishwasher
A leaking dishwasher can be a nuisance and potentially cause water damage to your kitchen. There are several reasons why your dishwasher might be leaking, and in this guide, we will explore these issues and provide solutions to help you fix the problem.
1. Faulty Door Gasket
The door gasket creates a watertight seal around the dishwasher door. If the gasket is damaged or worn out, it might not seal properly, causing water to leak from the front of the dishwasher.
Solution: Inspect the door gasket for signs of wear or damage. If it’s damaged, you’ll need to replace it. A new gasket can effectively prevent your dishwasher is leaking.
2. Drain Pump
The drain pump drains the water through the grey corrugated waste pipe and into your plumbing. If the pump housing or seal is damaged it could cause the dishwasher to leak. If the pump is defective this would also cause a leak as the machine will fill for its rinses on top of the wash water and overflow to the anti-flood switch which will then activate and show an error code.
Solution: Remove either the front inspection cover or the side panel and inspect the pump and housing for evidence of damage or obstruction. If you find the pump is damaged, leaking or not functioning properly, you’ll need to replace the pump. A properly functioning pump is crucial to prevent a leaking dishwasher.
3. Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve feeds water from your home’s main water line into the dishwasher. If the valve is damaged or cracked, it could be the source of a leak.
Solution: Inspect the water inlet valve for signs of cracking, damage, or leaks. If you find any of these issues, replace the water inlet valve. A new valve can help stop your dishwasher from leaking.
4. Dispensers & Grommets
The detergent and rinse aid dispensers are usually located on the inner door panel of the dishwasher. If the dispenser gasket or latch grommet is damaged, it could cause a leak.
Solution: Inspect the detergent and rinse aid dispensers and their grommets for damage. If you find any issues, replace the dispenser or grommet. This can help prevent your dishwasher from leaking.
5. Spray Arm
The spray arm directs water and detergent around the dishwasher. If the spray arm is damaged or warped, it could cause water to be directed at the bottom of the door, causing a leak.
Solution: Inspect the spray arms for signs of cracking or damage. If they’re damaged, you’ll need to replace them. A new spray arm can help stop your dishwasher from leaking.
6. Pressure Switch
The pressure switch measures the water level preventing the dishwasher from overfilling with water. If it’s malfunctioning or blocked the water level could be too high, causing a leak. More modern machines use Water Flow Meters to measure the amount of water flowing into the machine. (A faulty flow meter will cause the machine to fill and empty at the same time)
Solution: Test the pressure switch and flow meter with a multimeter for continuity. If the readings differ from zero or infinity, you’ll need to replace the pressure switch or Water Flow Meter.
7. Hose Clamps & Hoses
The hose clamps secure the drain hose and circulating hoses to the dishwasher pump. If the clamps are loose or the hoses are cracked, it could cause a leak.
Solution: Inspect the hoses for signs of wear or damage. If they’re damaged, you’ll need to replace them. New hoses and clamps can help stop your dishwasher from leaking.
Remember, always disconnect the dishwasher from the power source and the water supply before starting any repair work. If you’re uncomfortable doing these repairs yourself, it’s best to hire a professional.
